Support Services

Alamance Regional offers support services and support groups for our patients and their family members. Support services are designed to complement medical care.

CARE (Cancer Associated Rehabilitation and Exercise) – The CARE program is designed to help cancer patients cope with some of the many common side effects of cancer, such as fatigue, depression, pain or insomnia. This program includes supervised cardiovascular and strength exercise tailored to individual patient needs and a learning/discussion time. Based on individual needs, the program may also include lymphedema treatment, nutrition consultation, physical or occupational therapy, and other services. Patients may ask their doctor or nurse practitioner for a referral, or call the Alamance Regional LifeStyle Center at 336-538- 8100 for more information.

Healing Touch Services – Healing touch can help alleviate pain, reduce the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, and reduce stress and anxiety. A certified healing touch practitioner uses light touch to influence the body’s energy fields. Healing touch is provided free of charge to all patients being cared for at Alamance Regional Cancer Center. Massage Therapy Services – All cancer patients and primary caregivers are eligible for free massages.

Cancer Transitions is a free six-week workshop designed to help cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment care. Expert panelists, including physicians, nutritionists and fitness experts will discuss a variety of topics. For more information, call Rosa Davis at 335-586-3737.

Care Manager – A care manager is available to assess the psychosocial needs of cancer patients and link patients to appropriate resources. These needs may include assistance paying for medications, utilities, food, transportation, medical equipment or assistance in the home. The care manager also assists patients who need help applying for disability and links patients to support services to help cope with cancer diagnosis.  Valet Parking - Valet parking is located at the cancer center entrance and is available Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. Valet attendants are trained to assist patients in and out of vehicles, and wheelchairs are available.

 Cancer Center Resource Room and American Cancer Society Office – A resource room for cancer center patients and families and an office of the American Cancer Society are located just down the hall from our cancer center in the Medical Arts Building. This room includes brochures and other information for cancer patients and families, as well as wigs, hats and scarves. You may also call 336- 586- 3504 to reach the resource room.

 Road to Recovery – Cancer patients who do not have transportation for treatment appointments may be eligible to receive rides through Road to Recovery. This program is a free service coordinated by the American Cancer Society. Volunteer drivers who are screened and trained provide transportation.  Look Good…Feel Better – This free program helps women learn beauty techniques that can restore their appearance and self-image during chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatment. Women learn about makeup techniques, skin care, nail care, and options related to hair loss such as wigs, turbans and scarves. Look Good…Feel Better is offered through the American Cancer Society the second Monday of each month from 10 a.m. to noon. To register for this program, call 1-800-ACS-2345.

 

Support Groups

Wings to Recovery –Newly-diagnosed cancer patients are able to meet with a cancer survivor to ask questions and talk about fears and concerns. Volunteer mentors are specially trained offer emotional support. For more information or to refer a patient to Wings to Recovery, contact Rosa Davis, RN, at 336-586-3737.

Cancer Family Support Group – A support group for friends and family of cancer patients is offered once a month on the Alamance Regional campus. This group is open to anyone who serves as a support person for a cancer patient. For more information, call Rosa Davis at 336-586-3737.

Breast Cancer Support Group – A breast cancer support group meets the first Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Norville Breast Care Center. For more information, call 336- 538-7577.

KidsCan! – This support group provides emotional support for children and teens that have a parent or family member with cancer. Art activities, group discussions and other resources help children and teens explore feelings, questions and fears. Trained specialists offer separate sessions for children, teens and parents.
